Pride Month has me thinking about the NHL’s Hock

Pride Month has me thinking about the NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone campaign, which I love and know that the message is for more than just people in the LGBTQ community.

Presently, there are more than 700 players on NHL rosters and zero have come out as gay or bisexual. Same goes for the NHL’s minor league, the AHL. Then I thought about my own locker rooms.

According to a 2017 Gallup poll, 4.5% of Americans identify as LGBT. Considering I’ve been playing hockey since the 1970s and have played with thousands of people, based on that stat, I should know at least dozens of LGBT hockey players. Over the years, I’ve skated with about a half dozen out lesbians, but ZERO gay or bisexual men. Can that be possible? No.

I take this to mean that we have a lot of work to do in order to make gay and bisexual men feel comfortable being out at all levels of hockey. We need to watch how we talk at the rink, especially the language used on the ice and in locker rooms. We need to make people feel welcome, included and an equal part of the team (and hockey community) no matter who they love.

Indeed hockey is for everyone and we need to do a much better job of allowing its players to be out and proud. After all, that’s what Pride is all about. - Rick

When 36-year-old Chris Paul went vegan two years ago, he kept it a secret from his teammates, not wanting to let them know his “secret advantage.” It’s no secret that this NBA superstar who has led his Phoenix Suns to a 3-0 lead in the second round playoff series is having an MVP-caliber year.

Paul changed his diet to be faster on the court, and has spoken about recovering faster, feeling less soreness, and experiencing less inflammation in his body since going vegan. And he dove into the lifestyle off the court as well. Paul is one of the executive producers of the documentary film “Game Changers,” serves as a spokesman for Beyond Meat, and promotes plant-based snacks, food and drinks - especially Black- and Brown-owned brands - through a partnership with the goPuff digital delivery service. It’s National Cancer Survivors Day and the odds

It’s National Cancer Survivors Day and the odds are that you have someone close to you who has survived cancer. Perhaps it’s a family member. Both of my parents have survived cancer, and in my mother’s case, twice.

We all have cancer genes that lay dormant until exposed to “activators,” which turn on the cancer cells. Activators can be chemical such as exposure to toxic substances, air or water, or nutritional. If you eat animals and/or dairy products, you greatly increase the risk of activating cancer cells within your body, while eating plants does the opposite. If you do get cancer, eating plants instead of eating animals and/or dairy can aid the body’s defense against cancer.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US and many of the cancers Americans get come from the Standard American Diet (SAD). Some refer to these cancers as “disease of affluence” because societies that can’t afford to eat animals and dairy and are forced to primarily eat plants have dramatically less cancers than us. The research that T. Colin Campbell presents in “The China Study” shows that high protein diets (15-20% of calories as in the SAD) spurs cancer growth while diets that include calories from protein consisting only of 5% have the lowest cancer rates.

A cancer diagnosis used to always be viewed as a death sentence, but medical science and knowledge about the role nutrition plays have come a long way in creating survivorship. It’s amazing how much what a person eats can impact getting cancer and/or becoming a cancer survivor. - Rick
