Today’s word of the day: Humanewashing. When you read or hear “humane,” “free range,” “cage free,” “grass fed,” “pasture-raised,” “wild caught” or certifications cited like “animal welfare certified” used in regards to your favorite animal products, it’s just bullshit marketing designed to deceive and hide the brutal cruelty, horrific suffering and premature deaths involved with producing meat, egg and dairy products as well as clothing such as wool.

You see humanewashing every day in ads and social media and on labels and packaging despite the fact that these terms still allow for inhumane practices including long-term confinement, filthy living conditions, virtually no medical care, forced breeding, no outdoor access, electric prods, cutting or burning off horns without pain relief, and stealing new born calves from their mothers. Don’t eat (or wear) deceit.

I could have been dead or at least had a heart attack or a stroke by now if I hadn’t been so vigilant about my nutrition, exercise & stress management.

It’s said that you can’t out exercise a bad diet. What do you say about someone who eats super clean, works out like a beast & is committed to meticulous health & wellness practices yet born with deadly genes?

While I believe it’s weak to use family history as an excuse for poor health habits & laziness, this week I learned that no matter what I do, I cannot overcome my genetic makeup. It’s been a blow to my confidence as a plant-based advocate/athlete & contradicts the research & studies that I’ve done in recent years - before, during & after earning my certificate in plant-based nutrition. Frankly, I’m still struggling to process the fact that my life now depends upon taking a prescription drug when I’ve been taught to use food as medicine. Food alone won’t do anymore in my case.

It’s not the first time that my plant-based nutrition, as healthful as it is, is enough to resolve a serious health condition. Seven years ago, osteoporosis forced me to rely upon daily injections for 2 years. The pill that I now have to take daily will likely need to be taken for the rest of this lifetime - in conjunction with my plant-based diet.

I stopped eating animals 31 years ago and I haven’t eaten animal cholesterol in six years. I exercise 15-20 hours every week. I don’t smoke, drink or do drugs - not even caffeine. I manage my stress & blood pressure via meditation, but my genetic curse is hardening my arteries anyway.

I feel great & don’t have any symptoms. If it wasn’t for the calcium score test that I did recently with my cardiologist, I never would have known…until it was too late.

As Yogananda said, “The body will always find a reason to go (die).” He also taught about surrendering to Divine will. My spiritual shortcoming is evident in my struggle with acceptance since the diagnosis.

Rest assured that I am surrendering & taking the little pills while continuing to eat, train, compete, meditate & live like the “freak” that I’ve always been. - Rick

Pills and procedures. Our “healthcare” system is based on prescribing drugs and performing surgeries. Instead of funding and promoting healthier nutrition to empower us to live healthier lives without pills and procedures, the government is funding the harmful food sources consumed by the majority of the population in the Standard American Diet.

According to a 2018 study, 73% of the dairy industry’s income came from government programs even though consuming dairy is linked to causing heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity among other ailments. Most of the $40 billion dollars in government subsidies given to Big Agriculture last year went to factory farming, whose products kill and make us sick via heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity among other illnesses.

When we turn to medical science for help, we find that the majority of the research is funded by the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to funding medical conferences, Big Pharma also funds universities and colleges. The majority of the medical industry and academia are not going to publish scientific studies critical of those who make them rich. Without systemic change, we’re stuck with pills and procedures. It’s a plandemic.

Oh sugary checkout counter candy, you’re just not my type. Oh salty bags of junk food chips and pretzels attempting to flirt with me as I stand in line, there’s never been any allure in you. Oh charming slice of cake, cute cookie, desirous donut or decadent brownie, a lifetime ago, I would have devoured you even before I got out of the parking lot, but alas, I’ve moved on. Even if you’re vegan, if you don’t make me healthier, stronger, fitter or faster, you’re not going into my mouth.

What I struggle to resist is splurging spontaneously on precut fruit. Ridiculously overpriced and unnecessarily suffocated in plastic, your radiant glow and seductive promise of sweet and juicy nectar is a temptation that I’m powerless to ignore. - Rick

Long ago, I learned that the world wasn’t going to stop just so that it would be the perfect time for me to workout or meditate. I’d have to take that time and devote it to myself if I was ever going to make progress towards my goals. The sanctity of that daily time allotment is vital to my health and life balance, which is why I don’t typically bring my cell phone into the rink, gym or meditation.
