Yoga is a Sanskrit word that means union with God, and the yoga that most people commonly practice is asanas, i.e. postures to prepare the body for communion with God (i.e. meditation). Yoga is essentially a spiritual practice even though many consider it a form of exercise or working out.

I am a yogi. A yogi is anyone who practices a scientific meditation technique. I am a disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda, a key figure who came to the US in 1920 to introduce India’s science of yoga to Westerners.

Today is the 7th annual International Day of Yoga, which was established by a United Nations resolution “to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.” Namaste. - Rick

I don’t get to skate with Joe as often as I’d

I don’t get to skate with Joe as often as I’d like even though he does make it out a few times a week, which is pretty impressive for this stay-at-home dad. In addition to raising two kids with his wife, Joe works from his home studio as a recording engineer. He indulges his own creative muse as a singer-songwriter and occasionally plays live gigs in an alt-rock band. Talk about balanced living.

Joe has been “plant curious” even before going with me to the “Game Changers” premiere. He enjoys eating at one of my favorite vegan restaurants (Sage) as much as I do, and now that things are open and we are both vaxed, I look forward to sharing our next plant-based meal there.

Earlier this week, President Biden finally made it official: Juneteenth is a federal holiday. Also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day and Liberation Day, Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. That national day of freedom could have taken place when President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, however, slaves in Texas were not granted their freedom until June 19, 1865.

Today, we not only recognize and celebrate that historic day, but also honor African-American history, culture and progress. It is indeed progress that Juneteenth is now a federal holiday, but we still have a long way to go in this country in terms of freedom and equality for Black Americans.

Pride Month has me thinking about the NHL’s Hock

Pride Month has me thinking about the NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone campaign, which I love and know that the message is for more than just people in the LGBTQ community.

Presently, there are more than 700 players on NHL rosters and zero have come out as gay or bisexual. Same goes for the NHL’s minor league, the AHL. Then I thought about my own locker rooms.

According to a 2017 Gallup poll, 4.5% of Americans identify as LGBT. Considering I’ve been playing hockey since the 1970s and have played with thousands of people, based on that stat, I should know at least dozens of LGBT hockey players. Over the years, I’ve skated with about a half dozen out lesbians, but ZERO gay or bisexual men. Can that be possible? No.

I take this to mean that we have a lot of work to do in order to make gay and bisexual men feel comfortable being out at all levels of hockey. We need to watch how we talk at the rink, especially the language used on the ice and in locker rooms. We need to make people feel welcome, included and an equal part of the team (and hockey community) no matter who they love.

Indeed hockey is for everyone and we need to do a much better job of allowing its players to be out and proud. After all, that’s what Pride is all about. - Rick
