“Big mistake.”

That’s the response of government officials in the Faroe Islands (Danish territory) after 1,428 dolphins were killed in one day. Hunters used jet-skis and small boats to lure a large pod into shallow waters on Sunday and slaughtered them. The entire superpod was killed. This may be the record for the largest cetacean slaughter ever, which included pregnant females and young dolphins.

Because of the immense size of the pod and the chaos the whalers (hunters) caused, no doubt that dolphins suffered unnecessary stress and pain during the massive kill. The entire dolphin hunt is unnecessary. It’s barbaric, inhumane and shameful.

I really regret this decision. Not the mullet, which was on point for a college hockey player in 1986. Paying to take a picture with a lion cub while working at a music festival in Memphis that was run by the company that owned and operated the Ringling Bros. circus.

I didn’t know any better at the time, but wild animals like this are NOT here for our amusement. This baby was no doubt ripped away from his/her mother prematurely, and the mother and father were most likely torn from their natural habitat in order to become circus “performers.” It’s pure speciesism that humans do this for the purpose of “entertainment.”

Humans were NOT - and never will be - given dominion over the animal kingdom. - Rick

“It’s the best thing I can ever do to help you

“It’s the best thing I can ever do to help you become a better athlete.”

That powerful realization hit me after a recent 90-minute counseling session with an elite athlete who I’m advising on their transition to becoming a plant-based athlete.

I skate with a lot of young elite athletes, committed to becoming the best they can be as hockey players, some with the goal of going pro. With everything else being relatively equal - strength, speed, skill, power, agility and endurance - what separates one athlete at this level from another is how they recover from training and competition. A plant-based diet minimizes inflammation, reducing muscle soreness and helping the body recover faster, therefore allowing you to train harder and more often than your competition, which ultimately makes you the better athlete.

It’s not about the drills we do together on the ice, or the training we do together off the ice; it’s educating, inspiring and empowering these elite athletes to eat plant based that will do the most to help them become better hockey players. And not just better athletes throughout their athletic careers, but healthier human beings for the rest of their lives. - Rick

Our country changed forever while I was changing into my cycling gear.

It was before 6am as I pulled on my spandex jersey and shorts while watching the Today show as I did before every morning ride in order to find out the temperature outside. I was chomping on a Clif Bar when news broke that an airplane hit the World Trade Center. As I pulled the Velcro tight on my cycling shoes and fastened my helmet, I watched the live report with the camera focused firmly on the twin towers when the second airplane slammed into the building. It was hard to comprehend what was happening and rather robotically, I grabbed my Trek and rushed out the door to meet the team for our normal Tuesday training ride.

The sun had yet to rise while I pedaled briskly to Santa Monica. The unfathomable images of what I’d just witnessed on live television played over and over again in my head. During the ride, some of us spoke of the morning’s events, informing those who didn’t know what occurred. Were these somehow bizarre accidents or was America under attack?

The ride felt “off” as minds raced elsewhere. When I rolled back home around 9am, I didn’t know what news awaited me. Thousands of Americans were dead in the wake of an orchestrated terrorist attack that took place for the first time on American soil. Terrorist attacks like this happened in foreign countries, never here…until September 11, 2001.

There was nothing normal about that training ride. The USA changed forever that morning twenty years ago today and I shall never forget. - Rick

Thankfully, I’ve never been that low personally, but I’ve been with several loved ones who have been suicidal. It’s not a subject anyone is comfortable talking about, which is why Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is so important.

It’s been a very challenging couple of years with stress (health, work, financial, relationships, political, etc.) that can be relentless. Depression can be crushing and is as contagious as COVID yet there is no vaccine for depression. Lack of human contact and social distancing have fostered feelings of loneliness and isolation. You’re not alone. Help is available.

I’ve dreaded the arrival of September ever since I found out what goes on in the cove via the Academy Award-winning documentary (“The Cove”) over a decade ago. For six months beginning September 1, nine different species of dolphins and whales are legally allowed to be chased, harassed, slaughtered or taken captive, which decimates family pods, orphans juveniles and condones abhorrent cruelty to sentient mammals.

Although these horrors take place in Taiji, Japan, the first Dolphin Defender Month, which began September 1, enables everyone from all parts of the globe to stand up for these magnificent creatures. Ways to get involved this month include joining an event at the Japanese consulate or embassy; demonstrate at a local marine park; fundraise by participating in a virtual race; and raise awareness about these brutal, cruel and inhumane practices. Fitness and skill. Ryan and I started skating together six years ago. I’ve always been able to challenge him with my fitness and he’s always been able to challenge me to develop my on-ice skills. Through positive, constructive feedback and encouraging words, we’ve been able to push each other to improve and be our best.

“It’s the happiness and the thrill of chasing your own potential. We do that through encouragement, love and growth. You motivate me and that really helps me. We both are driven, obsessed,” said Ryan.

I’ve watched and supported Ryan’s rise from juniors to the pinnacle of college hockey. This season, he’s poised to take another big step on the path to playing pro. But first, he’s got to recover from minor surgery and I’m right there ready to challenge him (on and off the ice) and cheer him on. - Rick
