Vitamin C: The Orange Lie

There’s a good chance that if you’re feeling rundown and in need of vitamin C to boost your immune system, the first thing you’ll turn to is oranges. That’s the marketing power of the citrus growers. The fact is that of the top 20 foods that contain the most vitamin C, oranges are No. 20 on the list. You’ll get more vitamin C by eating:

1. Kakadu Plums (100 times more vitamin C than in oranges)
2. Acerola cherries
3. Rose hips
4. Chili peppers
5. Guavas
6. Sweet yellow peppers
7. Blackcurrants
8. Thyme (three times more vitamin C than in oranges)
9. Parsley
10. Mustard spinach
11. Kale
12. Kiwis
13. Broccoli
14. Brussels sprouts
15. Lemons
16. Lychees
17. American persimmon
18. Papayas
19. Strawberries

Drinking orange juice does contain quite a bit of vitamin C, however its sugar content is very high so don’t drink a lot of it. Juicing the oranges removes the majority of the fiber content, so make sure you drink it with pulp to maximize the health benefits of fiber such as aiding digestion and reducing the risk of diabetes, heart disease and some cancer.
