It’s been a thrilling fortnight watching the Tokyo Olympics. I worked with or know three of the athletes, one of whom won a gold medal.
While I watched an equal amount of male and female track, swimming, basketball and cycling, I primarily watched women compete in beach volleyball, gymnastics, soccer and volleyball. Team USA’s women dominated on the track, won gold in both types of volleyball, won gold in basketball and won bronze in soccer. The women’s competitions were not only super entertaining, riveting and exciting, these stellar athletes are inspiring and incredibly impressive.
The pay gaps and disparity in opportunities and broadcast coverage for women’s sports beyond the Olympics needs to change. Not only do the women deserve equal pay, women’s sports deserve an equal platform. Give female athletics an equal chance.
