Silent = Complicit

Got into it with someone recently after they distributed racist, anti-LGBTQ and anti-immigrant content. It is not okay to stay silent when confronted with racism, hate and discrimination. We agreed last summer that silent equals complicit.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been searching for words to convey my seething rage about essentially the rebirth of Jim Crow laws in Georgia to prevent Black Americans from voting. I’ve been searching for words to convey my anger at the anti-transgender laws signed into existence in Arkansas and South Dakota. These discriminating actions breed hate, which inevitably leads to violence.

In Georgia, a white dude with a gun and a fetish shoots up two Asian establishments, killing six Asian women. Just 10 miles from the courthouse where a former Minneapolis police officer is on trial for murdering George Floyd, a 20-year-old Black male, Daunte Wright, was killed by a white police officer for no justifiable cause. In Virginia, seeing a member of the US military assaulted with pepper spray by a police officer just because he was guilty of driving while Black is absolutely heartbreaking.

So yes, I had one of those difficult conversations because I’m not going to stay silent in the face of racism, hatred, discrimination, oppression and the senseless loss of life. What continues to happen in the US to Black Americans, Asians and members of the LGBTQ community is NOT okay and MUST STOP.
