Prince whisked past me on a golf cart in the airport. It was Christmas 1989, moving day from from Miami to LA. I was stuck in Minneapolis on a layover and ended up having to spend the night in a nearby airport hotel due to icy runways. I arrived in Los Angeles 31 years ago today to begin my new life.
What the flyby by the Purple One meant symbolically I do not know, but we’d meet again numerous times over the next five years when I was spinning records in the hottest Hollywood hotspots, moonlighting from my day job at the time as a music & entertainment publicist. He even brought me one of his singles (“Gett Off”) to debut on the dance floor. Several months after my LA arrival, my favorite band at the time, Depeche Mode, released a single with lyrics that poignantly seemed to encapsulate my view of my adopted home. “
All I ever wanted, all I ever needed is here…” LA has profoundly shaped me in ways both anticipated and unimagined. My formative pursuits in music, entertainment and sports grew, changed and evolved over the decades. Discovering my spiritual path and my passion for compassionate living as a plant-based warrior have budded, blossomed and bloomed fragrantly into essentials that affect every aspect of my life.
On the anniversary of my becoming a Los Angelino, I give voice to the “Enjoy The Silence” chorus with great ardor and a heart full of gratitude. “All I ever wanted, all I ever needed is here…”
