Adopt, Don’t Shop

She lived on the streets in the marina the first year of her life, scavenging for food to survive. She had one litter and ended up with a complication that could have killed her had she not been captured and taken to the vet by her fairy godmother. After receiving emergency medical care, she was “fixed,” which was denoted by clipping the tip of her right ear. After being nursed back to health, the plan was to release her back onto the streets.

A cat-loving and cat-rescuing friend knew that I had a thing for black cats and when she emailed a photo asking if I was interested in adopting this cat, it took my breath away. Unbeknownst to my friend, a black cat came to me in a dream twice a couple weeks earlier. I woke up in tears both times because I thought it was my previous cat Mocha, who died 7 years prior. But when I received the photo from my friend, I knew it was this cat that came to me in a dream asking me to rescue her.

I brought Ananda home 8 years ago today. She’s the greatest Christmas gift I’ll ever receive. I’m so grateful that she survived everything that she endured that first year living on the streets so that we could find each other. She is an incarnation of pure LOVE. As I always say, Ananda is a rescue pet and she rescues me daily.

If you’re going to get a pet, get a rescue. Adopt, don’t shop.
