As we pray for one Black superstar athlete, let’s recognize the very first. Marshall “Major” Taylor won the world cycling championship in 1899 to become only the second Black world champion in any sport. A year later, at age 22, Taylor won the US national sprint championship, setting many records on the velodrome. He won hundreds of cycling meets all around the world and would have won even more had he been treated fairly.

Despite Taylor’s extraordinary speed and athletic ability, he faced bigotry, hatred and racism. Lynching laws and Jim Crow laws combined to enforce segregation, erecting barriers that made it difficult and at times prohibited Taylor from competing in what was America’s most popular sport at the time. But the first celebrity Black athlete forced promoters’ hands by being a strong box office draw even if many of the spectators only showed up to hurl racial epithets at the cycling champ.

“In a word I was a pioneer, and therefore had to blaze my own trail," Taylor wrote in his autobiography, “The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World.”

“There will always be that dreadful monster prejudice to do extra battle because of their color...Life is too short for any man to hold bitterness in his heart."

I noticed on social media that Seba Johnson spends

I noticed on social media that Seba Johnson spends a lot of time upside down. That actually makes sense because at age 14, she turned the Winter Olympics upside down when she became the first Black skier and the youngest alpine skier in Olympic history.

We met a few years ago at the Switch4Good Dairy-Free Athlete Summit and this vegan since birth glows. Radiant and vibrant, Seba loves hiking in nature or doing yoga by the ocean. It’s said that you’ll find whatever you look for and Seba’s superpower is that she sees hearts everywhere she goes.

People are getting the message the Universe sent in 2020! Sales of plant-based meats went up 264% in 2020. 40% of Americans have tried plant-based products and 33% of households have someone who went vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or flexitarian in 2020, according to stats published in Parade magazine.

Almost all of the deadly pandemics that have emerged over the last 100 years have come directly from eating animals or how animals are treated by humans and a major cause of the climate emergency is a result of factory farming - the enormous damage that it does to the earth’s resources and the greenhouse gases it produces. So keep eating plant-based and dairy-free foods to help protect our health and the health of our planet.
