You would think that a major university like UCLA

You would think that a major university like UCLA would fully fund an ice hockey team, but you’d be wrong. The players are responsible for coming up with the majority of the funding to run the program that dates back to 1926. Presently, the team doesn’t have the budget to get white road uniforms and can only afford to practice once a week.

One of the reasons that I got involved with @uclahockey is to help the players go to the next level - as athletes from a strength, conditioning and nutrition standpoint - and to help the team become a D-1 program. That’s why our company, Vibrant Energy, got involved: to aid with the PR, marketing and sponsorship work that’s needed to take the program to the next level.

As you can see in this video, there’s a lot of mismatched gear that we aim to make uniform with your help. UCLA Hockey recently launched a SparkIt campaign to help purchase road unis and add a second practice day per week starting in the Fall. It makes my heart smile whenever I see Creighton smile like this. We’ve been skating together for the past five years. Hockey has given this bright, creative and kind-hearted young man on the Autism spectrum an outlet to connect with people.

However, sometimes depression makes Cray stay away from our crew and it becomes a battle to get him to come out. Exercise - moving the body - always helps elevate the spirits once those “feel-good” endorphins start flowing.

On Kentucky Derby day, I sat on my hands instead of writing another anti-horse racing rant. Now that it’s been brought to light that “famed” (notorious) horse trainer, Bob Baffert, who “trained” the winning horse, Medina Spirit, that failed a post-race doping test because of an illegal amount of steroids, I’m not staying silent about the “sport” based on abusing and doping animals.

To make matters worse, Baffert, who has a lengthy history of training horses that failed drug tests, including FIVE in the last year alone, is playing the victim, adding insult to the horses he has injured and killed.

“I don't know what's going on in racing right now, but there's something not right. I don't feel embarrassed. I feel like I was wronged,” said Baffert.

YOU were wronged, Mr. Baffert? Not the horses you have repeatedly given performance enhancing substances throughout your lengthy career that is littered with track bans and suspensions? Not the fans who pay and bet big money on a fake “sport” that isn’t any more real than wrestling, let alone a “sport” that abuses free-willed animals who do not volunteer to train, race, be whipped and be given PEDs by the humans they have come to trust?

“Why is it happening to me? You know, there's problems in racing, but it's not Bob Baffert."

This is happening to you because of your decades of animal abuse and illegal doping. It’s called karma, Sir, and YOU are one of the problems.

"I'm worried about our sport," Baffert said. "Our sport, we've taken a lot of hits as a sport.”

Because doping animals and forcing them to train and race until their fragile legs snap or their heart explodes is not a sport. It is abuse and murder. At least one horse dies every day at a race track in the US. Shut it down. Ban horse racing. - Rick

It’s nearly playoff time in the @NHL and @NBA. Take a look at the winning percentages of the first place teams. It’s in the 60-70% range. Imagine if you got grades like that in school. It’s barely passing.

It’s not a happy Mother’s Day for the moms who have their babies taken away from them a few hours after giving birth, never to see their babies again. This horrendous and unnecessary act of inhumanity inflicted by humans will take place several times during their 3-5-year life before these mothers are sent to slaughter because they are tired, heartbroken and no longer produce enough milk.

On this Mother’s Day (and every day), keep these loving, caring and beautiful mothers in mind if you are still enabling the dairy industry to practice cruelty, abuse and rape (like humans, cows only produce milk if pregnant, thus the cows are forcefully impregnated each year by man).

I’ve been forbidden to write about the mental he

I’ve been forbidden to write about the mental health issues suffered by my family members. And that antiquated way of thinking is the problem.

No family is immune from mental health issues. Like anyone else, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, substance abuse and bipolar episodes have impacted my family life ever since I was a young kid. Back then, people were ashamed of mental health problems and hid them. But today, since these issues are so commonplace, people are speaking up in order to remove the stigma attached to getting help for mental health issues.

Get physically sick or injured, and there is no shame in seeking medical care. But mental health care, that’s a different story and it shouldn’t be. We all need to do our part to change that by openly discussing these challenges, making it easier and more comfortable for people to seek help. There is no shame in getting help for mental health issues. In fact, it takes courage and strength, which are admirable qualities.

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month and I’ll be posting about it several times in May...while maintaining my family secrets at their request. - Rick
