Encouraging to see the buzz everywhere about “Seaspiracy.” Often I hear from the people I advise on nutrition that they’re okay with not eating meat, but they’re still eating fish. Perhaps after watching this enlightening Netflix documentary that will change.

Industrial fishing kills millions of marine life animals not targeted for food such as dolphins, whales, sharks, seals and turtles.

Plastic discarded and dumped into the ocean is filling the bellies of fish.

Fishing nets make up almost half of the great Pacific garbage patch while enough fishing line is dropped daily to go around the Earth 500 times.

Nearly 4 billion acres of the sea floor is lost every year due to trawling compared to 25 million acres that are deforested annually on land.

47 countries reportedly have slavery in the fishing industry.

To make matters worse, this death and destruction in the fishing industry is government funded to the tune of $35 billion per annum.

Habits and routines keep us rooted, which is exactly why the last year has been so difficult and unsettling. Athletes especially are creatures of habit and routine, and mine have constantly been in flux since the COVID outbreak. No two workout weeks have been the same over the last 55 weeks and it’s a challenge.

Our gym finally reopened and I am down three pounds of muscle since my last gym workout eight months ago.

On the positive, I have been forced to adapt, get creative and be flexible. Despite craving normalcy and regularity, I’ll keep putting in the work to grow, improve and get stronger while doing what I love.

It’s said that the human mind processes over 50,000 thoughts per day. You can’t think clearly to make correct decisions when incessant waves of thought constantly stir the waters. Meditation helps slow and still the ripples of thought so you can think clearly. The longer you sit still in meditation, the calmer and clearer your mind becomes.

One of the blessings of living in the marina is the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve, 640 acres that are home to approximately 1,700 species, including many that are threatened, endangered and designated as special status. It’s the last untouched coastal wetlands in Los Angeles and we can walk to it.

The gas industry is threatening to bulldoze Ballona under the guise of a “restoration” project. The only thing the fossil fuel industry is actually interested in restoring are the gas pipes and oil wells that lay underneath the reserve. Beyond being deadly for animals, including White-tailed Kite, Great Blue Heron, Burrowing Owl, Least Bell’s Vireo, Snowy Egret, Grey Foxes, Striped Skunks, Silvery Legless Lizards and Slender Salamanders, more than 1,000 native animals (such as the harbor seals and sea lions that I featured in a video last week) and plants will be destroyed, displaced, or have their habitat obliterated if this decade-long project moves forward.
