75% of new and emerging diseases are transmitted through contact with animals, according to the CDC. That includes pandemics like COVID-19, SARS, AIDS, bird flu, swine flu, mad cow disease, the Spanish flu, etc.

At factory farms, animals live in crowded and confined conditions, spending a lot of time in their own urine and fecal matter. From contact with fences and wires along with contact with each other, they get open sores and lesions. Bacteria thrives in both scenarios and that is where disease starts and spreads rapidly. In an attempt to protect their investment (the livestock), factory farms often inject the animals with antibiotics, which are then eaten by humans when they eat animal flesh, building up human resistance to antibiotics. Thus, humans become resistant to antibiotics used to combat diseases and viruses like coronavirus.

On factory farms, when the waste that animals are forced to live, stand and sleep in is washed away, it often forms a manure lagoon, which poses additional health and environmental risks. Manure lagoons are highly susceptible to spills and leaks, such as when storms, hurricanes and floods occur, making the problem more threatening to human health.

Another major source of infectious zoonotic diseases comes from fairs and wet markets where animals come in contact with the waste, blood and puss from other animals, causing disease that is easily transmitted from animals to humans.

The best way to stop new diseases, halt the spread of diseases and to reduced the environmental damage done by animal agriculture is to change our relationship with animals. We’ve got to stop eating them, stop breeding them to be eaten, and stop consuming animal products (dairy). If we do this, we will reduce our risk of new diseases and pandemics by 75%.

“Unreal.” That’s how co-captain Billy Zegra

“Unreal.”

That’s how co-captain Billy Zegras described the scene this weekend when 40 hopeful young men showed up to battle for a spot on the 2021-22 UCLA Hockey Club. After two days of tryouts, cuts were made and the roster was trimmed to 23 players ahead of next weekend’s season opening games at Eastern Washington.

Zegras is a senior and has seen the program grow during his tenure. He and co-captain Duke Fishman have an ambitious vision to take Bruins Hockey to the next level. Part of that involved finding a home rink where the team would have pro-level facilities. They found that at The Cube in Valencia.

The players selected to represent UCLA Hockey this season, including sophomore standout Alex Setteducati, moved into their locker room. They now have white unis to go with their traditional powder blue kit. After losing their season last year to COVID, it’s going to be an exciting season for these athletes and I’m proud to be working with the #ColdBrus to be their best as they enter their 95th year. - Rick

It’s nearing midnight on a Friday night and I’

It’s nearing midnight on a Friday night and I’m in the gym. As I lift, people socialize outside, dressed up after a night out on the town, in pairs or small groups. They’ve been drinking and/or some leave the scent of cannabis as they pass by. Others are barbecuing animal flesh that occasionally wafts into the gym. I’m training alone and the gym is empty besides this #over50 #veganhockeyplayer who will “feast” on a post-workout, plant-based, protein-packed salad.

I’m not immune to thoughts of “Why?” Why do I live, train and eat like this? Why do I make so many sacrifices in order to put in the work to be the best athlete that I can be? The life of an athlete can be a lonely one, and for the great ones, it often is.

Yogananda reminds, “Seclusion is the price of greatness.”

Why do I do what I do? Because I love it. And this quote from one of hockey’s ageless legends mirrors my own story. - Rick

“Big mistake.”

That’s the response of government officials in the Faroe Islands (Danish territory) after 1,428 dolphins were killed in one day. Hunters used jet-skis and small boats to lure a large pod into shallow waters on Sunday and slaughtered them. The entire superpod was killed. This may be the record for the largest cetacean slaughter ever, which included pregnant females and young dolphins.

Because of the immense size of the pod and the chaos the whalers (hunters) caused, no doubt that dolphins suffered unnecessary stress and pain during the massive kill. The entire dolphin hunt is unnecessary. It’s barbaric, inhumane and shameful.

I really regret this decision. Not the mullet, which was on point for a college hockey player in 1986. Paying to take a picture with a lion cub while working at a music festival in Memphis that was run by the company that owned and operated the Ringling Bros. circus.

I didn’t know any better at the time, but wild animals like this are NOT here for our amusement. This baby was no doubt ripped away from his/her mother prematurely, and the mother and father were most likely torn from their natural habitat in order to become circus “performers.” It’s pure speciesism that humans do this for the purpose of “entertainment.”

Humans were NOT - and never will be - given dominion over the animal kingdom. - Rick

“It’s the best thing I can ever do to help you

“It’s the best thing I can ever do to help you become a better athlete.”

That powerful realization hit me after a recent 90-minute counseling session with an elite athlete who I’m advising on their transition to becoming a plant-based athlete.

I skate with a lot of young elite athletes, committed to becoming the best they can be as hockey players, some with the goal of going pro. With everything else being relatively equal - strength, speed, skill, power, agility and endurance - what separates one athlete at this level from another is how they recover from training and competition. A plant-based diet minimizes inflammation, reducing muscle soreness and helping the body recover faster, therefore allowing you to train harder and more often than your competition, which ultimately makes you the better athlete.

It’s not about the drills we do together on the ice, or the training we do together off the ice; it’s educating, inspiring and empowering these elite athletes to eat plant based that will do the most to help them become better hockey players. And not just better athletes throughout their athletic careers, but healthier human beings for the rest of their lives. - Rick

Our country changed forever while I was changing into my cycling gear.

It was before 6am as I pulled on my spandex jersey and shorts while watching the Today show as I did before every morning ride in order to find out the temperature outside. I was chomping on a Clif Bar when news broke that an airplane hit the World Trade Center. As I pulled the Velcro tight on my cycling shoes and fastened my helmet, I watched the live report with the camera focused firmly on the twin towers when the second airplane slammed into the building. It was hard to comprehend what was happening and rather robotically, I grabbed my Trek and rushed out the door to meet the team for our normal Tuesday training ride.

The sun had yet to rise while I pedaled briskly to Santa Monica. The unfathomable images of what I’d just witnessed on live television played over and over again in my head. During the ride, some of us spoke of the morning’s events, informing those who didn’t know what occurred. Were these somehow bizarre accidents or was America under attack?

The ride felt “off” as minds raced elsewhere. When I rolled back home around 9am, I didn’t know what news awaited me. Thousands of Americans were dead in the wake of an orchestrated terrorist attack that took place for the first time on American soil. Terrorist attacks like this happened in foreign countries, never here…until September 11, 2001.

There was nothing normal about that training ride. The USA changed forever that morning twenty years ago today and I shall never forget. - Rick
