Plant Based vs. Vegan: What’s The Difference?

Occasionally, I’m asked the difference between vegan and plant based. The best explanation that I’ve heard is that plant based related to what people eat whereas vegan includes food and lifestyle choices in regards to the products used and worn. After adopting a plant-based diet, I took the next step by making sure that the products that I use are vegan. That meant changing the supplements that I took (the supplement capsules were made from horse bone) and replacing my toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo, conditioner and the “product” that I put in my hair; moisturizers, shaving cream, soaps, laundry detergent and household cleaning products. I retired my leather wallet and belt, which were replaced with vegan leather products. And as posted recently, I finally got my first pair of vegan sneakers last month. How far one takes being vegan is a personal choice. It’s not easy removing all products made from animals from usage, but I’m determined to do my best to reduce animal suffering in every possible way. – Rick
