Yoga is a Sanskrit word that means union with God, and the yoga that most people commonly practice is asanas, i.e. postures to prepare the body for communion with God (i.e. meditation). Yoga is essentially a spiritual practice even though many consider it a form of exercise or working out.
I am a yogi. A yogi is anyone who practices a scientific meditation technique. I am a disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda, a key figure who came to the US in 1920 to introduce India’s science of yoga to Westerners.
Today is the 7th annual International Day of Yoga, which was established by a United Nations resolution “to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.” Namaste.
